Actor, born in Dublin, Ireland. He joined the National Theatre for its inaugural season in 1963, returning to it in 1978 after appearances in repertory at Birmingham and elsewhere. He played for the Royal Shakespeare Company (1982-3), and has made several television appearances, notably in the title role of Dennis Potter's play The Singing Detective (1986, BAFTA), and Stephen Poliakoff's Perfect Strangers (2001, BAFTA). His films include A Dry White Season (1990), Mobsters (1992), Nothing Personal (1997), The Insider (1999), and Gosford Park (2001). Television films include Wives and Daughters (1999), and Longitude (2000, BAFTA). He was knighted in 1998.
