Actor, born 10/1/30 in Limerick, Co Limerick, SW Ireland. He studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and immediately joined Joan Littlewood's company in The Quare Fellow (1956). He remained with the Littlewood company for some years and became established as a name in the West End production of The Ginger Man (1959). He made his screen debut in the comedy Alive and Kicking (1958), then became well known for his portrayal of rebel characters such as the rugby player in This Sporting Life (1963). Later films include Camelot (1967), A Man Called Horse (1969), The Wild Geese (1978), The Field (1990), To Walk With Lions (1999), Gladiator (2000), and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001). Died 10/25/02.
