Alan Rickman was born on February 21, 1946 in Hammersmith, London. He studied at Chelsea School of Art, the Royal College of Art, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, and played a wide range of theatre roles during the 1980s, including seasons at the RSC in 1978-9 and 1985-6. He became well known for his film work, beginning with Die Hard (1988), and including Truly, Madly, Deeply (1991), Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves (1991, BAFTA Best Supporting Actor), Michael Collins (1996), Rasputin (1996, Emmy), Dogma (1999), Galaxy Quest (1999), and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001). He made his directorial debut with The Winter Guest (1998), which also starred Emma Thompson and Sean Biggerstaff.
