Timothy Spall was born on February 27, 1957 in London. He may be the closest associated with director Mike Leigh. He has has acted for the director on both the stage and screen. Spall made particularly strong impression in "Life is Sweet". He played a socially awkward gourmet chef. Timothy has appeared in a number of disparate productions. He made his film debut with a supporting role in the "Who's Quadrophenia". He spent the next ten years splitting his time and energy between the stage and screen. Spall was named an Officer of the Order of British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth on New Year's Eve in 1999 for his contributions to the arts.

He was diagnosed with leukemia in 1996 but is now recovered.

Three children: Pascale (born 1976), Rafe (born 1983) and Mercedes (born 1985).

He and 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' co-star Gary Oldman have both played the character of Rosencrantz; Oldman in 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead', Spall in Kenneth Branagh's 'Hamlet'.
